Four Statements Sticker

$1.75

Today's normal is yesterday's radical. Today's radical is tomorrow's normal.

We get to choose which side of history we're on. So

1. FUCK COPS. Police are trained to provoke, escalate, and harm. They are given license to murder anyone they want to, without repercussions. And police brutality targets black and brown people with shocking disproportion. Those with racial privilege use the police as a weapon to harm and disenfranchise black and brown communities (see: cops being called on black people for simply existing in a Starbucks). As the specialty coffee industry continues to reach new markets- an expansion that has heavily benefitted from gentrification - the privileged among us must agree to end our participation in police violence.

2. UNIONIZE. The hospitality industry is plagued by horrific workers' rights and human rights violations, and unionizing offers protections against exploitation. Unions means that business owners are held accountable for maintaining a safe and dignified workplace with transparent pay grades. Unionized womxn of all racial backgrounds experience a reduced wage gap, and more womxn in union leadership means that gap can literally be closed. Unionized womxn are less likely to experience sexual harassment, and are more likely to be supported when harassment does occur.

3. PAY MORE FOR COFFEE. The coffee value chain is in crisis, with coffee prices so low that growers are taking a loss on their harvests year after year. While many within our sector throw up their hands and say "It's complicated", this is in fact very actionable. Importers, exporters and buyers literally can pay more for coffee. And it needs to happen now, because millions of people are suffering under a depreciating market price, while our industry faces collapse. (Specific phrasing and purple hue is a nod to the collateral that accompanied Matchbook Coffee Project's collaboration with Sam Neely).

4. ABOLISH ICE. Founded in 2003 (only 16 years ago), the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department - ICE - enforces violent and inhumane policy. The US has directly destabilized many coffee growing countries, such as El Salvador, and now denies entry to folks fleeing conditions caused by that instability. People seeking refuge are jailed at our borders, separated from their families, detained indefinitely, subjected to inhumane conditions, and deported. Meanwhile, US coffee buyers are able to travel freely to and from any coffee growing country they want. US coffee pros have a very specific and important responsibility to support immigrants and refugees.

So, in summation: Fuck cops. Unionize. Pay more for coffee. Abolish ICE. Thank you for reading.

Safety and accessibility note:

I intentionally designed these stickers with wearer safety in mind. The type is small enough that others can't read it unless they're trying *really* hard.

This may seem counter intuitive, but it's not.

I don't want to send y'all out there wearing giant FUCK COPS gear!

This is way more about affirming your own values for yourself, with friends, and within trusted circles.

If you order a sticker and find that the type is too large for you, just send me a note and I will refund you for the sticker (I unfortunately am not able to refund shipping, but when I am a larger business I'll refund anything you want tbh).

These sturdy vinyl stickers are 2" and priced on a sliding scale. Just choose the price that is comfortable for you. My goal is to make each item as accessible as possible, to folks from all different parts of the coffee industry. It works because the community truly observes the honor system: those who are able to pay more make it possible for others with less resources to pay less.

Every order is hand-packed with care by me, Umeko, in my bedroom in West Oakland. I usually spend Sundays packing orders, and ship out on Mondays.

Profits from most sales go toward my labor for packing, shipping, admin, design, and writing (check my coffee blog!) - *except* for products labeled Solidarity.

For these items, 100% of profits go to the nonprofit organization named in the product description. All Solidarity items are marked with a πŸ’ž.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to message me!
